Each book was unique. One of a kind, unique, expensive, hand-written. Knowledge was highly esteemed and was usually transferred in oral form; up until the 15th century and the invention of the printing machine. Johannes Gutenberg made the first machine in 1450 and literally enabled the sharing of knowledge. The first printed book was the Bible, and then other printed works ensued. Up until today the printing technology has been constantly evolving, and the books continue to amaze us. Books can stimulate and excite your imagination and curiosity, because everything that exists or has ever existed has been documented and can be found in a book; reading can teach you new skills, ideas and provide you with a completely new and positive outlook on the world around you. Books can take you away from your real world for some time and take you to someone else’s world of fantasy. Books relax, educate, liberate, connect and nourish.
Books come in various shapes, sizes and types of binding. When you think about size, i.e. dimensions of your book, there are key items you should consider like the production expenses. If the process of book creation or printing is too expensive, it will increase the price on the market and you will lose your competitive edge. You should focus your attention on the design of the cover. The cover is a direct invitation to the reader! It is the first thing that draws the reader to your book, so put yourself in the reader’s position and design it the way you would design a book that would capture your attention: select colors, fonts and photographs which are appropriate for the topic and atmosphere of the book. Bear in mind that the readers always read the back cover as well, therefore you should think about their content: short summary of the book, author’s short biography or recommendations. The internal book fold is mainly standardized in order to ultimately facilitate reading; it contains legible text, standard font (12 pts), pagination, section heading. Letters that are too small or too large can have a negative impact on the reader’s focus. The most common is the soft glued binding, and it is also the most cost effective one. Many authors believe that hard covers provide additional value to the books, but they are far more expensive and less practical.
